Speaking
in
Tongues

What is the gift
of
Speaking in Tongues

There are many Christians that believe speaking in tongues is the main gift and that the other gifts of the Holy Spirit may or may not be manifest in all Believers. Does scripture back this up? Along with over 40 scriptures, these are some of the questions we will take a look at in this book.  Click on the link below to choose either a Free e-Book or paperback.

The Gift of Speaking In Tongues

In several of our Bible studies, the topic of Speaking in Tongues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit often came up. Speaking in Tongues seemed to spark the most discussion, dividing the room into two groups—those who practiced it and those who did not.

Among the ones who did not, some explained that they were waiting for the Holy Spirit to come upon them the way it did with the Apostles in the upper room. That first instance of speaking in Tongues happened on the Day of Pentecost:

Acts 2:1–4
And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The group who did speak in Tongues described receiving it as an act of faith. They compared it to how a child learns to speak by imitating their parents. In the same way, some said they received the gift of Tongues by stepping out in faith and simply beginning to speak.

This raised important questions:

  • Is Speaking in Tongues real?

  • Is it meant for every believer or only for a few?

  • Does God still give this gift today, along with the others?

  • If so, how do we receive it? Do we wait for a dramatic moment, or is it something that can happen more simply?

  •

We decided that putting together a small booklet, by gathering all the scriptures on Speaking in Tongues, would be a good starting point. Still, if I had to guess, I would say that even with all the Biblical passages laid out, the debate will likely continue.
